What are floorball blades really made of?

Plastic is a synthetic product, which in turn consist of one or more polymers blended with any additive. The polymer is the chemical compound where the molecular structure and composition makes it plastic to end. Although plastic is an artificial material that are natural polymers. For example, natural rubber and protein are two polymers.

Depending on the type of additives mixed with the polymer, plastic with different uses and characteristics are formed. Plastics are divided into two main groups, thermosets and thermoplastics. The plastic floorball blade are made of a thermoplastic. That it is a thermoplastic means that the plastic becomes soft when you heat it. It also means that you can redesign it when it is heated and soft. It can not do with thermosetting plastics that become corrupted if you heat them.

How are floorball blades manufactured?

Blade are manufactured by melting thermoplastics injected under high pressure into a mold of metal. In the mold cavities are filled with plastic and it becomes the finished floorball the blade.

Polyethylene
Designated by the letters PE. It is done either by oil but also of renewable materials such as sugar cane. Polyethylene is one of the most common and most widely used plastics. It is probably because it holds its shape well, is easy to dye to the fun colors and is inexpensive to manufacture. PE is also available in different variants. On the floorball blade you encounter HDPE or HD-PE, which means High Density Polyethylene. That is a PE plastic having a higher density, a dense mass. Denser mass gives a little more stable plastic but also a little higher weight.

Polyamide
Designated by the letters PA. Another name for polyamide is nylon. Polyamide is a very common plastic and used a lot of interiors in cars because it is so stable and resistant to abrasion. Also polyamide are easy to dye and doesn't discolor when used. PA are available in many different compositions and some of them provide a good glide. PA may be sensitive to cold.

Polypropen
Designated by the letters PP. Polypropylene can be, just as polyethylene, produced from sugar cane. Most are made of oil, however. Polypropylene is easy to mix with other materials. This means that you can get many variations of PP which all have slightly different characteristics. Polypropylene is inexpensive to use and has a low density. Low density allows the plastic to weigh a little less. Polypropen do not lose it's characteristics due to use but keep it's shape and stability over time. However, PP is easily scratched and is sensitive to cold and UV radiation.
